Glamis 2000: Spring Break (2nd Weekend)

Friday's sandstorm gave way to the best riding weather seen here in a long time. But what about the law enforcement climate, which we have all heard so much about lately? In a dramatic change from recent weekends, the BLM has seemingly backed off from its zero-tolerance policy and concentrated on education instead of enforcement. The result was more cooperation among the duners and probably the safest Spring Break on record. Hopefully this will continue, with less antagonism and more amity in the Dunes.

U.S. Congress has Dunes in crosshairs (again)

There is much debate about the proper use of the Algodones (Glamis) Dunes area. For many years, the solution has been a compromise: the Dunes south of Hwy 78 are allocated for offroad use. The Dunes north of Hwy. 78 are set aside as wilderness  -- where no private motorized vehicle may penetrate.

Congress, however, is once again eyeballing the Dunes for conversion to full protected status. In total, four million acres in the state of California are in their crosshairs. While the current plan is vague, the wilderness north of Hwy. 78 will be included, if passed.

PHOTOSPORT is committed to showing both sides of the issue. Unfortunately, the prohibition of motorized vehicles limited the distance we could get into the North Side, given the time available.
