art at 70 mph - paul martinez

Monty's Garden Restaurant, L'minster, Mass., 17 June 2000

.......... We travel the world, but are not a part of it.

Photographers observe and record life for others, but in the end, remain outsiders. Those who choose this walk of life go a lonely way, forever on the periphery of life. We are close by, occasionally visible, but never truly among those living life.

We are those on the edge of experience, seeing and capturing it, and, as a result, never quite joining in.

We see a great range of deeds, but participate not. We shoot as much for ourselves as for others, if only to remember where we were. Our cameras are our only tools to stop, what is becoming more and more a blinding blur of movement.

The exhibition Art@ 75 MPH is my gallery of these images. Taken in two-week segments, between assignments for PHOTOSPORT and others, they are an attempt to record the sights I have no time to stop and check out further.

They offer a superficial view of what could be done, if there only was time to stop and plop down a view camera. OTOH, no view could capture a sight such as Monty's Garden, above.

Most of the images are from a moving automobile, through safety glass, and some are indeed at speeds of 70 miles or faster. All were taken handheld with an Olympus D620L digital camera.

With that out of the way, let's look at the pictures.
