San Diego Calif., Sept. 21, 2003 -- While the Women's World Cup gets
underway, the various WUSA league franchises are starting to wind down
operations. Many franchises have cut prices of their merchandise to the bone.
And one -- the San Diego Spirit -- has put up the
actual
game-used uniforms of the players, for as little as $10 for a pair of
shorts.
Items moving fast
Game-used Spirit jerseys from 2001 and 2002 (presumably
washed) are being sold for as little as $15. Jerseys of the more prominent
players, such as Shannon MacMillan ($110), attract a premium, probably to
prevent an early sell-out. The premiums are an interesting index to the current
measure of the players. For instance, Shannon Boxx, whom the Spirit traded
away in 2002, now attracts an $85 premium due to her phenomenal performance
in her first three international caps. And Kim Pickup at $85 is the highest
premium not named to a national team.
