Team USA -

World Cup 98

MAR 31, 1998

Warming up for World Cup '98, qualifiers USA and Paraguay met in a "friendly" at Qualcomm Park in San Diego March 14, 1998. Team USA debuted its new red Nike away uniform in the match.

Paraguay scored first when Denis Caniza fired on an open goal with an assist from striker Miguel Benitez.

The US equalized only six minutes later, when Chad Deering scored by header on a Eric Wynalda corner. The goal ended a three-game scoreless drought against Paraguay by the Americans.

USA kept the momentum and opened the second half when defender Marcelo Balboa put the US up 2-1 on a low header (Alexi Lalas assist).

Though the Americans continued to probe the Paraguayan defense for another score, their offside trap wasn't being called and Paraguay was able to make several dangerous open goal shots on US. Finally, Francisco Arce tied the game at the 74th minute.
