Tennis lost one of its most important players when Steffi Graf retired in August, 1999, following the TIG Tennis Classic in San Diego.

In a year of incredible comeback victories, including winning the 1999 Roland Garros, the 30-year-old's injuries finally caught up to her in August when she was forced to pull out of San Diego with a nagging thigh injury. That would be her last tournament.

Graf, however, had little left to prove, winning 21 Grand Slams and more than $20 million in a career spanning almost two decades.
