Glamis Dunes - North Side

Glamis Photos - Spring Break 2000

The North Side of the Algodones Dunes is a place of immense beauty, quiet and solitude. No forms of transportation are permitted, making exploration and visitation difficult. It is, after all, an hostile desert environment.

Compared to the South Side, the area receives very little use  -- environmentally sound policy, but perhaps not the best way to present and educate people about the Dunes. As a result, all humanity has been eliminated from the central Dunes. The fringes can still be explored. The best way to enter the North Side, as you will be on foot or horseback, is not from Hwy. 78 striking north, but from Ted Kipf Road striking west.

Visits are best limited to the winter months. In the summer, the temperature can rise past 120 degrees. Sidewinders (vipers) are active in the warm months. If you run low on water, the Coachella Canal can be reached by striking directly west from any point in the Dunes. It has water year-round.

Other options: Not many here. If you are rich, you can explore by helo. If you are politically connected, you can probably swing an exemption.
